Associates in Dermatology Celebrates 30 Years of Community Service

April 26, 2019

For nearly three decades, the physicians and staff of Orlando-based Associates in Dermatology have remained focused on delivering an unrivaled level of care to patients across Central Florida communities for six counties. In light of the on-and-off sunny days throughout the year, Dr. Michael Steppie, his doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners want to remind you that soaking in the sun carries serious health risks. Younger patients and those with darker skin tones often believe they are at a lesser risk for cancer. Nonetheless, recent studies confirm that just the opposite is true. For example, over the last twenty years, the incidence rate of melanoma among Hispanics has risen nearly 20%. Truth is anyone can be at risk for developing dangerous skin conditions regardless of his or her age, ethnicity, or skin tone.

Striving for Healthcare Excellence

Founded in 1989, Associates in Dermatology proudly continues to deliver an unrivaled level of care to patients across numerous Central Florida communities. As a well-respected dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon, Dr. Steppie is today president and medical director of the award-winning practice. His role as an ardent supporter of the Central Florida community goes far beyond the routine practice of dermatology. "I feel my most important goal is to help patients avoid the effects of overexposure to the sun, premalignant growths and skin cancer," says Dr. Michael Steppie.

Throughout his time at Associates in Dermatology, Dr. Steppie's highly influential work and unparalleled effort to educate communities about life-saving dermatologic solutions has earned him a mantle full of prestigious awards and recognitions, including numerous Vitals Patient's Choice and Compassionate Doctor awards. Through his affiliations with numerous civic organizations, foundations, and charities, Associates in Dermatology has provided free medical care to Central Florida's uninsured and indigent patients. Dr. Steppie is also one of the elite few dermatologists and Mohs skin cancer surgeons who are members of the Skin Cancer Foundation's Amonette Circle.

Giving Back to the Community

Central Florida's year-round warm, sunny climate means local residents spend more time than normal enjoying the outdoors. That means increased time in the sun and a higher level of exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Unfortunately, it also might explain why our area's rates of new skin cancer diagnoses are much higher here in Florida than those experienced elsewhere. Realizing that many area residents either do not know or simply fail to take the higher risks of skin cancer seriously, Dr. Steppie and his skincare professionals routinely offer FREE cancer screenings during many popular community events, especially during Skin Cancer Awareness month each May.

Associates in Dermatology has been a participating member of the West Orange Chamber of Commerce (WOCC) for over fifteen years. WOCC provides visioning, planning and leadership for numerous central Florida communities like Dr. Phillips, Gotha, Horizon West, Lake Avalon, MetroWest, Oakland, Ocoee, Orlando, Orlo Vista, Pine Hills, Windermere & Winter Garden. The West Orange Chamber is also a supporter of Healthy West Orange, a grassroots movement that aims to make west Orange County the healthiest community in the nation. Dr. Michael Steppie and key executives from Associates in Dermatology recently met with WOCC to discuss how supporting a healthy community will result in meaningful benefits with bettter health programs like free screenings and wellness programs.

Michael Steppie, M.D. is a regular contributor to print, television and online media with articles and campaigns aimed at educating the public about the risks of skin cancer and encouraging them to adopt simple practices to help protect their skin. As a continuing sponsor of the Daily UV Index featured on Fox 35 for the eighth consecutive year, Associates in Dermatology has already become Central Florida's most trusted source for quality information about sun exposure. Dr. Steppie also serves as an Assistant Professor in Dermatology at the Orlando Regional Campus of Florida State University College of Medicine. His expert opinions have been quoted in numerous publications, such as Men's Health Magazine and The Skin Cancer Foundation Journal.

It is a new day in public health as the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) recently announced its efforts to protect, promote, and improve the health of residents through newly integrated population surveillance programs that will be collected by state, county and community partners. Control of Communicable Diseases and Conditions Which May Significantly Affect Public Health is the mandate that empowers the FDOH to monitor and record communicable diseases, like the diagnosis and treatment of a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Dr. Steppie and his doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners have accepted this new mission to raise awareness about STD in the central Florida communities that Associates in Dermatology serves.

College of American Pathologists Accredited Laboratory

After a thorough on-site inspection, the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) awarded the Associates in Dermatology Laboratory in Kissimmee full CAP lab accreditation to join more than 7,600 CAP-certified medical facilities worldwide. Founded in 1961 by a group of pioneering pathologists, CAP seeks to raise the quality of medical laboratory services provided in the U.S. and internationally. “This award is well deserved,” said Dr. Steppie, noting the exemplary leadership by the lab's director. “Our entire staff works hard to ensure our CAP lab provides the highest level of anatomic pathology and dermatopathology services for patients throughout the Central Florida and Greater Orlando area.”

"The quality of service provided by our in-house laboratories is the key to helping save the lives of skin cancer patients," continued Steppie. "If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with a potentially deadly skin disease, you can rest assured you're in the best of hands when it comes to your medical care." Laboratories that successfully land accreditation are those that adhere to the highest possible standards, as evidenced by results of strict inspections of each lab's facilities, safety programs, lab equipment, staff qualifications, patient records and overall management guidelines. Skin cancer diagnoses are performed every day by our dermatopathologists, dermatologists, and Mohs surgeons to determine the safest and most complete removal of affected areas.

Heartfelt Mission to Deliver Stellar Clinical and Cosmetic Care

After three decades of community service, Associates in Dermatology continues to deliver a full range of clinical and cosmetic procedures to keep patient's skin, hair, and nails looking attractive and healthy. As a recognized Mohs cancer surgeon, he proudly added a non-surgical approach for the minimally invasive treatment of non-melanoma skin lesions and tumors using low-energy radiation. Thanks to efforts of dermatologists like Dr. Steppie, the prognosis for people with skin cancers has been steadily improving. Diagnosed early, most skin cancer is curable with a survival rate above 98 percent.

Unique skincare needs call for unique products. To that end, Dr. Steppie formulated his own line of STEPPIE MD Ethereal Beauty skincare products designed to address and treat a variety of issues. On-site dermatologic procedures such as medical-grade chemical peels and laser resurfacing can help to reset the clock on your aging appearance, while an at-home skincare regimen can help to prolong the effects of your personalized treatments.
