What is Electrocautery?
Electrocautery uses a needlelike cautery to treat a variety of abnormalities on the surface of the skin. The hand-held device is heated by an electric current and applied directly to the target area.
Why choose Electrocautery?
Cosmetically, electrocautery can treat individual skin conditions such as small cherry hemangiomas (cherry red papules on the skin containing an abnormal proliferation of blood vessels), telangiectasias (small dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin), and sebaceous hyperplasia (disorder of the sebaceous glands in which they become enlarged, producing yellow, shiny bumps on the face). Since the treatment targets a specific spot, there is little to no downtime and you can resume most daily activities immediately.
How is this procedure conducted?
Electrocauterization is the process of cauterizing skin simultaneously. However, cauterization even at a low setting can be slightly uncomfortable. So, your healthcare provider will likely apply a topical numbing medication to make the procedure as painless as possible.
After the treatment?
You will leave with a small superficial burn at the treatment site. After a day or two, it will form a small scab that will flake away in approximately 5 to 10 days. Daily use of a topical antibiotic will accelerate the overall healing process.
How often should I do Electrocautery?
Depending on what is being treated, you may require more than one treatment. You can consult with one of our dermatology providers or our paramedical esthetician to determine if a single treatment will suffice.

I have been going to Jenny, the paramedical esthetician, at the Dr. Phillips location for over a year now. She is the best! Very friendly and knowledgeable. She has helped me through electrolysis with quite a bit of unwanted hair on my face. It is a commitment to do it right, but I have been very happy with the results. I have also used her for facial chemical peels. She is great with both. I highly recommend seeing Jenny!
